Antibacterial substance from staphylococci discovered with new mechanism of action against natural competitors

Possible alternative to antibiotics produced by bacteria – Many bacteria produce substances to gain an advantage over competitors in their highly competitive natural environment. Researchers at the University Hospital Bonn (UKB), the University of Bonn and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) have discovered a new so-called lantibiotic, namely epilancin A37. It is produced by staphylococci that colonize the skin and acts specifically against their main competitors there, the corynebacteria.

Vaccinia Virus – New Insights into the Structure and Function of the Poxvirus Prototype

An outbreak of infections with the mpox virus – formerly known as monkeypox – in Europe in 2022 led to a rise in interest in poxviruses. An international research team investigated the structure of the poxvirus prototype, the vaccinia virus (VACV). The team found that trimers of the A10 protein, an abundant protein of the virus, play an important role in the formation of the mature virus. These trimers may also be involved in interactions with other cell components during infection, which could provide a starting point for the development of antiviral therapies against viruses from the poxvirus family.

New world record: ELISE experimental testing facility achieves target values for ITER Neutral Beam Heating

An ion source for neutral particle heating is being developed at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, which is intended to heat the plasma of the world’s largest fusion experiment ITER to many millions of degrees Celsius in the future. Researchers have now been able to generate the ion current densities required for ITER Neutral Beam Injector in the ELISE experimental testing facility for the first time.

Researchers from Denmark and Germany have found brown fat’s “off-switch

Researchers from the University of Southern Denmark, the Novo Nordisk Center for Adipocyte Signaling (SDU), the University of Bonn and the University Hospital Bonn (UKB) have found a protein that is responsible for turning off brown fat activity. This new discovery could lead to a promising strategy for safely activating brown fat and tackling obesity and related health problems. The results of the study have now been published in the journal „Nature Metabolism“.

Leipzig physicists show that light can generate electricity even in translucent materials

Some materials are transparent to light of a certain frequency. When such light is shone on them, electrical currents can still be generated, contrary to previous assumptions. Scientists from Leipzig University and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have managed to prove this. “This opens new paradigms for constructing opto-electronic and photovoltaic devices, such as light amplifiers, sensors and solar cells,” says Inti Sodemann Villadiego, Professor at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at Leipzig University. The scientists have published their findings in the journal Physical Review Letters.
