For her Ph.D., Malaysian researcher Sharifah Rafidah Binti Wan Alwi conducted research on the cost-effective reduction of water consumption by means of a specific water network design. She did this work at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), where she currently works as a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering. Specifically, Wan Alwi proposed water minimization strategies for the university mosque, which resulted in savings of up to 90 percent. Wan Alwi has research expertise in a wide variety of areas and has won numerous grants and sponsorships as well as awards for her work, which she has presented at several international conferences. Wan Alwi has been involved in seven consulting projects and has been active as a marketing and planning development officer in two commercialization grants.
She frequently works as a consultant and advisor for Pusat Tenaga Malaysia, a national energy research center administered by the Malaysian Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia (MECM). At the moment, she is working on the development of a software program for energy audits. It was this multifaceted professional activity in the environmental field, ranging from teaching, consulting and training to the preparation of the launch of her own company for the marketing of a software program for resource preservation, which was particularly recognized by the jury. In Germany, Wan Alwi is hoping to network with other scientists in order to familiarize herself with new technologies which could be applied in Malaysia.
