The multi-faceted company Masdar and Bayer MaterialScience have signed a strategic partnership agreement on sustainable construction focusing on developing the Bayer MaterialScience EcoCommercial Building (ECB) Program through the construction of an EcoCommercial Building prototype in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.

More than 40 percent of global energy is consumed by buildings, and they emit a third of global greenhouse gas. “Clearly, there is a need to address this on a larger scale,” says Patrick Thomas, CEO of Bayer MaterialScience. “The chemical industry offers real solutions for sustainable construction. Masdar City is a perfect example.” Masdar, a subsidiary of the Mubadala Development Company, is an Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy firm that develops sustainable and renewable energy solutions.

The Bayer Group company Bayer MaterialScience specialises in high-tech polymer materials and innovative solutions for a wide range of products. Masdar City is a clean-technology cluster that will be located in a sustainable city powered by renewable energy. It seeks to become a global centre for innovation, research, product development and light manufacturing in the fields of renewable energy and sustainable technologies. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is to be headquartered in the city. The ECB prototype in Masdar City incorporates energy-efficient, economical construction and state-ofthe-art design for a subtropical climate. It is to house the Middle East EcoCommercial
Building Program organisation of Bayer MaterialScience and provide an interactive platform for stakeholders interested in eco-commercial construction. The ECB Program combines high-tech products and expertise from Bayer MaterialScience and partner companies to facilitate solutions for new energy optimised buildings.
