The Center of Automotive Research on Integrated Safety Systems and Measurement Area (CARISSMA) of the Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences will make a significant contribution to the future of the medium and long-term challenges of road safety.
The approval of CARISSMA by the Science Council on July, 2nd 2010 is a novelty in the German research landscape: Besides the big research companies and universities, for the first time a university of applied science is fulfilling the strict requirements of a University Science Council on the promotion of research buildings. The construction work of the research facility will start in spring 2012, research activities will start in 2014.

Despite the "Vision Zero" initiative - the goal is the reduction to zero deaths in traffic - each year almost 39,000 people are killed on European roads. Referring to Germany, this means: every 77 seconds an injured road user, every two minutes an injured vehicle passenger, every two hours a person killed on the roads, every 13 hours a killed pedestrian and every 19 hours a killed cyclists .Children and adolescents are especially at risk: They have accidents three times more often than other road users. But also older people are often the victims of road accidents because of their restricted responsiveness and their physical constitution. The scientists from the Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences (HAW Ingolstadt), will try to face the social challenge, the "Vision Zero" initiative.

The embedding of the University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt (HAW Ingolstadt) in European and international networks such as the European University Association EUA or the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium enables global networking with excellent research teams. Not only has the protecting of the vehicle passengers, but also the protection of the most vulnerable road users a special attention in the program. CARISSMA will include testing facilities for replacement experiments in an early stage of development and testing equipment for mechanical component as well as drive, vehicle, traffic, and component simulation equipment and a vehicle dynamics and vehicle testing ground. The test equipment allows the scientists to develop these systems and to demonstrate the feasibility of new systems in replacement experiments in an early stage.
