Long-term impact of the German-Egyptian Science Year - 18 research projects funded through GERF program
???aural:Bildende???
In May 2009, the Egyptian Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF) and the German International Bureau (IB) of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched 18 joint application-oriented research projects that cover various fields of science. They will be financed for a period of two years through the "German-Egyptian Research Fund" (GERF). The GERF program is based on an agreement between the Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Hany Helal, and the German Federal Minister of Education and Research, Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan, signed at the end of the German Egyptian Year of Science and Technology in 2007, in Berlin. Both ministers agreed on establishing a joint research fund, worth 600,000 euros per year, with the aim of strengthening bilateral research cooperation between the two countries. The fund is designed to support bilateral teams of researchers and contribute to ensuring the translation of research results into applications. The 18 projects selected for funding cover the fields of Biosciences and -technology, Energy, Environmental Research & Technology, Health & Medical Research, Information & Communication Technology, Material Sciences, Nanotechnology and Physical & Chemical Technologies. Exemplary projects are "Development of an Integrated Protection scheme for Wind Farms" (Duesburg-Essen and Menoufiya Universities), "Conversion of agriculture waste products into cellulosic products of industrial significance" (Jena University and National Research Center, Organic Chemistry, Giza), "Prototype vaccine for prophylaxis and therapy of hepatitis C" (Essen and Cairo Universities), "Optically Responsive Nanocomposite Biosensors for Medical Diagnostics" (Heidelberg and Ain Shams University). GERF's second call for proposals will be announced in early 2010.
