2.4 million euros to promote young researchers from Bremen and New Zealand

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has provided scientists from the Bremen Research Network MARUM – Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences, the University of Bremen, the Senckenberg Research Institute, Wilhelmshaven, and its partner at the Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand, with 2.4 million euros for their research work.

The grants will be used to establish an International Research Training Group where the doctoral students receive a high-quality training at international level. The bilateral project between the Universities of Bremen and Waikato, initially with funding for 4.5 years, is called "INTERCOAST – Integrated Coastal Zone and Shelf-Sea Research".

The background to this partnership is to be seen in the ever greater use of coastal zones and shelf seas, and the accelerating increase in population density in these regions. This calls for a new generation of highly-qualified, independent specialists, experts in their fields with an interdisciplinary approach. By way of example, the coastal waters of the North Sea and the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand will be subjected to comparative studies. The researchers want to analyse, understand and predict changes to the natural marine environment and their social implications, and, where necessary, to mitigate these. One of the focuses of this cross-disciplinary collaboration lies in the field of marine geology and biology. Related questions are also addressed by scientists from the social sciences and law.
