Eleven partners from nine European countries and Korea join forces
Research cooperation between European countries and Korea is now being funded under a project called "KORANET", which stands for "Korean Scientific Cooperation Network with the European Research Area". The network aims to contribute to raising the quality, quantity, direction and impact of the joint research activities undertaken by Korea and the countries of the European Research Area.
This goal is to be achieved with the support of various analytical activities (such as mapping, foresight studies, and other reports), including a joint Call for Funding Proposals, plus further collaborative events, like conferences, workshops and information meetings in Europe and Korea. There are also plans to create a project website, to publish a regular newsletter, and to build a comprehensive database of information on relevant research institutions and existing research and development collaboration.
The project is coordinated by the International Bureau of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is primarily financed from the budget of the 7th Research Framework Programme. Eleven partners from nine European countries and Korea are contributing to the project scheduled to run from January 2009 to December 2012. The launch meeting in Bonn in mid February brought together some 35 participants – project partners, representatives of national ministries and the European Commission, as well as a number of interested observers.
