Dear Readers,

Far-reaching climate change, a drastic increase in energy demand and very unequally distributed water resources throughout the world are confronting humankind with considerable challenges. With the new Framework Programme "Research for Sustainable Development", we are investing two billion euros up to the end of 2015 in order to research new methods of enhancing energy efficiency, better natural resources productivity and innovative strategies of adaptation to climate change.

The Year of Science 2010, under the motto "The Future of Energy", also features renewable energies, reducing exhaust gas emissions and nuclear safety. It represents the start of a series of interdisciplinary science years in Germany in which we wish to communicate forward-looking topics not only to young people and junior academics but also to a wider public and will be supporting new research approaches across various individual disciplines.

You can find more about this topic as well as the latest information on other developments in science and research in this new issue of the newsletter "Research in Germany". The next issue appears in June, on the occasion of the 60th Meeting of Nobel Laureates.

Surgeons use interferential screws to fasten crucial ligaments in the knee. Screws made of polylactic acid (left) and hydroxylapatite (middle) and medical stainless steel (right).

Screws made of bone-hard biomaterial

Titanium is often used for screws applied in surgical operations. The screws usually have to be removed after a while or replaced by new ones. New composites of biomaterials make this unnecessary. They promote bone growth and are biodegradable.
