Transatlantic Perspectives – Europe in the Eyes of European Immigrants to the United States, 1940 1980

The aim of the research project is to trace transcultural perspectives on Europe and the emergence of hybrid European identities among European immigrants and émigrés in the United States between the 1940s and 1970s.

Objects of Energy Consumption

Based on the examination of household appliances, it analyzes the complicated sets of relationships and interdependencies which led to the rise of private households as primary consumer of energy. Building on the recent shift in the history and sociology of technology from the production to the consumption aspects of technologies and applying it to the debated field of energy, the project makes use of theories and methods in technology studies as well as museum and material culture studies.
