The international forum

During the “Green Talents Forum” the winners visited German universities, research institutes and companies and got to know exemplary projects from different fields of technology.

31. August 2009: Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)

PIK is part of a global network on questions relating to global environmental change. It cooperates closely with numerous international partners.


Plants can clean wastewater with their rhizospheres, but more knowledge is still needed about these processes.

1. September 2009: Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ

In the area of environmental technologies, the UFZ specializes on decentralized water treatment systems and uses new processes and monitoring technologies to conduct research on the ground and on groundwater.

1. September 2009: OSRAM Opto Semiconductors / Siemens AG

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors develops light-emitting diodes (LEDs) amongst others, a technology that will, in future, contribute to saving energy in a targeted way. In theory, the use of highly-efficient LEDs could almost halve the amount of energy used for lighting.


The waterhouse accomodates rainwater processing  facilities, a vacuum station and anaerobic wastewater treatment  facilities.

2. September 2009: Fraunhofer Alliance SysWater, Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB - DEUS 21

In the area of environmental technology, the Fraunhofer IGB is developing efficient process technologies for water and wastewater treatment and for the generation of biogas from organic waste materials as well as conducting research on technologies for the sustainable production of high-value products and energy using aquatic microalgae.

 Natural scientists and engineering scientists collaborate closely in the excellence cluster “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass” at RWTH Aachen University. The photo shows a lab at the Institute for Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry.

4. September 2009: RWTH Aachen University

RWTH Aachen University has carried out research and teaching on the subjects of environmental technology and ecology for many years. Special research priorities include energy, water, wastewater treatment, soil decontamination, resource efficiency, air pollution control, and clean technologies.

5. September 2009 - The „Green Talents“ meet young German scientists

Foresight Symposium: “Envisioning Pathways for Sustainable Production – Consumption Patterns“ - After visiting a number of research institutions and companies that are leading in the environmental field, the “Green Talents” arrived in Berlin-Adlershof.

7. - 8. September 2009: Individual Appointments

The „Green Talents“ meet German experts in environmental technologies.


9 September 2009: Professor Frieder Meyer-Krahmer, State Secretary at  the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), presents  the “Green Talents” certificates at the BMBF Forum for Sustainability  (FONA) in Hamburg.

9. - 10 September 2009: FONA Forum - 6th BMBF Forum for Sustainability

On the occasion of the opening of the FONA Forum, the Green Talents will be received by Professor Frieder Meyer-Krahmer, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, who will honour them for their efforts to develop creative and innovative solutions in the field of sustainability.
