On November 5th and 6th 2011, “Research in Germany”, represented by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), participated in “What Can You Be With A PhD”, a Science and Technology Symposium hosted by the New York University School of Medicine and sponsored by a consortium of New York City regional partners. The symposium, created by deans and administrators of graduate and postdoctoral programs in the greater New York area, seeks to inform participants about career possibilities in a global society.

Approximately 1.800 participants registered for the 2-day symposium and had the opportunity to choose between 30 different panel discussions such as “Careers in Pharma”, “Finding a Postdoctoral Position” and “Writing a Winning Fellowship”. The director of the German Center for Science and Innovation (GCRI), Ms. Joann Halpern, was part of a panel entitled “Here and There: Building your International Career” which drew approximately 100 participants.

Aside from the panel discussions, participants had the opportunity to visit a small exhibition hall with about 10 exhibitors, among them the Karolinska Institutet of Sweden, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Many participants stopped by at the “Research in Germany” table where staff members informed about research and funding opportunities in Germany, ranging from postdoctoral fellowship programs offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) to shorter programs, such as Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) offered by DAAD.
