Funding for PhD Students

There are several ways to finance your doctorate in Germany: working at your university or a German company, part-time job or a scholarship.

Many German funding organizations support highly talented international PhD students. As a rule, the prerequisite is an above-average first degree. Different institutions sometimes have additional expectations, e.g. a specific commitment to a social, sociopolitical or religious cause. A scholarship is granted for a limited time, as a rule for two to three years, and students usually have to reapply every year. Organizations that provide scholarships for outstanding students usually also support them with seminars and opportunities to exchange views within an alumni network.
