Profile of the funded project:
The promotion project facilitates a thematically new network consisting of a research institute, a university and  four R&D-oriented enterprises tailored to the specific modernisation requirements of the Russian industry and offering innovative solutions for improving resource and energy efficiency in production. This interdisciplinary alliance is broadly positioned along the entire value-added chain and disposes of both the necessary know-how and the expertise proven in the Russian market. The main focus is on three objectives:

  • Establishing scientific partnerships between production engineering research institutes in Russia and Germany
  • Presenting the competencies of participating enterprises in the field of energy and resource efficient production engineering and technology
  • Training and qualification with emphasis on efficiency technologies

The aim is to apply German know-how for exploiting and further developing efficiency technologies in Russia. The main project focus is on marketing the alliance and its region as a competence centre and source of cutting-edge technological solutions for the full range of energy and resource efficient production engineering solutions.

Profile of the network:
Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) / VEMAS-The Mechanical Engineering Network Saxony.

The following activities serve the purposes of presenting efficiency technologies for modernisation of production in Russia and generating joint scientific projects for the target industries Mechanical Engineering, Automotive, Rail, Aerospace and :

  • Market and competence analysis of efficiency technology needs
    in Russia
  • Participation in official business trips aimed at establishing
    new contacts
  • Attending fairs to present joint competencies in the fields of engineering/planning, automation technology, laser technology, surface technology and machine tool manufacture
  • Organizing thematic technology forums
  • Training and qualification initiatives

The project partners have extensive competencies in production engineering and technology and cover the entire range from basic and applied research to industrial applications and training and qualification. The lead partner of the network, Fraunhofer IWU, features key proven competencies in the domain of resource efficient production engineering and is currently running a number of major joint projects in this field. The VEMAS project group at the Fraunhofer IWU provides excellent access to the Russian market.
The participating entrepreneurial partners’ core competencies cover different stages of the technological value-added chain, such as engineering/planning, automation technology, laser technology, surface technology and machine tool manufacture.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU is one of the leading institutes for application-oriented research and development in the field of poduction technology for the mechanical engineering and automotive sectors. The main focus includes the development of intelligent production systems, forming and cutting technologies as well as mechatronics and adaptronics. The Institute creates innovative solutions for continuous process chains, from the components, to assembly units, all the way up to complex machine systems and completely new kinematics. The development of lightweight structures and new material- as well as energy-efficient technologies and products, together with the optimisation of the manufacturing process chains from the point of view of resource efficiency, constitute a focal point in the research activities. The Fraunhofer Institute IWU operates a group called VEMAS as an strategic alliance for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the field of mechanical Engineering. VEMAS identifies and promotes pioneering technologies and initiates cooperations between industry and research institutes. VEMAS stimulates networking among SMEs and assists them in analyzing and accessing new markets with a special focus on India and Russia.
