"The first competition yielded some interesting new approaches in the field of photovoltaics: In thin film PV cells, one of the layers is toxic cadmium sulfide. Today, the industry standard is a chemical bath deposition process associated with huge amounts of toxic waste. One Champion proposes a promising alternative route which could lead to more sustainable and efficient production. Another plausible approach aims for a fast analysis of intrinsic material and solar cell parameters like minority carrier lifetime. Clearly, easier access to spatially resolved lifetime data will benefit both material and cell developers. In short, the winning proposals represent a good variety of technologies geared towards better quality, increased efficiency, and less environmental hazards."
