Moral Compromise
2/10/12 - 2/11/12
Location: Bielefeld, Germany
Provided they are part of the political practice or of daily life, compromises seem to be of little interest to philosophy. We take the opposite view, however, saying that theoretical as well as practical relevancy of this term is – wrongly – undervalued. Against this background the symposium is intended to analyse the term from the theoretical point of view, i.e. by pursuing the question in which way a moral compromise of some kind should be understood and whether there are moral compromises. On the other hand, based on selected areas of practice we want to investigate on what terms moral compromises within legislation and jurisdiction may be possible and advantageous to solving further practical problems.
Behind this, there is the broader political question: could the concept of a moral compromise serve as a productive approach towards describing and making understood profound social conflicts in the world of today? It should be underlined though that it is not only a matter of political practice but also of conceptual clarification. Based on both – theory and practical, in particular political experience – the workshop intends to assess the chances of this concept.
