Minister Dipu Moni pays tribute to the Foundation’s commitment to climate protection
On 30 August, Dipu Moni, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh will visit the Humboldt Foundation in Bonn. The stateswoman is honouring the Foundation for its commitment to research cooperation with Bangladesh and especially to the field of climate protection. In particular, Moni wishes to inform herself about the Climate Protection Fellowships that the Foundation is awarding for the first time this year. These will allow prospective leaders from developing and emerging countries that are especially threatened by the effects of climate change, to come to Germany in order to cooperate with climate protection experts and establish networks between Germany and their own countries. The fellowships are funded by the Federal Environment Ministry.
The Foreign Minister will attend the introductory meeting for the first 15 Climate Protection Fellows and their German hosts, at which the fellows will introduce and discuss their projects. In the evening, the Minister will address the assembly with a talk on the dramatic impact of climate change on Bangladesh: What effects are already noticeable in the everyday lives of the population and what catastrophes threaten in the near future? What strategies is Bangladesh developing? What needs to happen at regional and international level? How can climate protection negotiations, such as those in Kyoto, Copenhagen and soon to take place in Cancun, increase their impact, and what can be done about the lack of international solidarity? How can research and international cooperation contribute towards solving these problems?
Attention press offices: The entire event is open to the press including opportunities to take photos and make sound recordings. Please register your attendance.
