Three million EUR for new Humboldt-Bayer Research Fellowships
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Bayer Science & Education Foundation will soon be awarding joint research fellowships. Until 2018, the Bayer Foundation will be making around three million EUR available to fund approximately ten Humboldt-Bayer Research Fellowships annually. The fellows will be selected from the fields of the life sciences, chemistry and pharmacy together with the applicants for regular Humboldt Research Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers.
In addition to the standard sponsorship provided by the Humboldt Foundation, the fellows will receive additional support from Bayer. The company and its foundation will for example facilitate contacts to people within the corporation, invite fellows to events or foundation alumni meetings, offer advice on career issues and job seeking, provide mentors and arrange factory tours.
For the Humboldt Foundation, cooperating with leading companies such as Bayer is a valuable instrument enabling it to offer a greater number of fellowships while increasing permeability between industry and research. Fellows, companies and the Humboldt Foundation benefit equally from these cooperations, according to Secretary General Enno Aufderheide. “They allow us to reach researchers who are considering a career in a global, research-based company and have not previously been particularly interested in a Humboldt Fellowship", explains Aufderheide.
“Bayer’s aim is to support the most talented young researchers and promote dialogue within the life sciences, chemistry and pharmacy around the world. We see our partnership with the globally unique network of the Humboldt Foundation as an important part of this endeavour", says Wolfgang Plischke, Member of the Board of Management of Bayer AG responsible for innovation, technology and sustainability and Member of the Board of the Bayer Science & Education Foundation.
